Questions About Pilates

Pilates is an exercise system focused on improving flexibility and strength for the whole body. It’s a series of precisely controlled movements designed to engage both the mind and body. Using flowing movements you will create long lean muscles, rather than bulk. Pilates is an invigorating exercise that leaves you feeling refreshed and in harmony with your body.
Pilates is a full-body workout designed to keep you safe. It can often be used in conjunction with physical therapy and rehabilitation. If you do have an injury history and have cleared Pilates with your doctor and/or physical therapist, please call our studio to consult with an instructor about the best options for you.
The Reformer is a piece of equipment or machine used in Pilates exercise. The Reformer glides backward and forward on rollers, and through the use of springs and attachments, it provides finely tuned exercise resistance for a wide variety of positions. We offer beginner group classes on the Reformer. For those with prior experience, we have multi-level classes.
While Pilates does include some yoga techniques, it was developed specifically for fitness and physical therapy. Pilates focuses on movement rather than the holding of postures. The breathing techniques are also different, as you are asked to draw in your abdominals rather than let it expand with breath.
Two to three times a week often produces the best results. Pilates can be effective over time even if you can only do one session a week.
You will have increased abdominal strength and muscle definition, a taller, slimmer body, less stress and pain in your neck and back, increased flexibility, and better posture and alignment.
Clients often feel and notice the effects of Pilates after their first session. Physical results can often be seen after approximately 10 sessions. The more consistent you are, the faster you will see results. According to Joseph Pilates, “In 10 classes you will feel the difference, in 20 classes you will see the difference, and in 30 classes you will have a whole new body.”
